$103k of hospital bills denied?

$103K in hospital bills denied?

Last week, I went to the ER for internal bleeding, and they needed to do an IR embolization to address the issue. I stayed in the hospital overnight for monitoring afterwards.

I have Aetna insurance, and now $103K in bills are appearing as denied in the Aetna app.

Does this indicate that the insurance company is planning to make me cover these costs? How dire is my situation?

EDIT: I’ll be calling Aetna today, but I’d appreciate any insights or advice from others here as well.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear about your situation. It’s definitely concerning to see such a large amount of bills marked as denied. First, it’s good that you’re planning to call Aetna—getting in touch with them directly is the best way to understand why the claims were denied and what steps you can take next.

There are a few potential reasons why your bills might be denied. It could be related to whether the care you received was deemed medically necessary, whether the hospital or providers are in-network, or if there were issues with the claims submission itself.

Keep in mind that a denial doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be responsible for the entire amount. Often, there are options for appealing the denial or negotiating with the hospital or providers. Aetna should provide you specifics on why the claims were denied, so be sure to ask for that information during your call.

In the meantime, try not to panic. Many people face similar situations with insurance, and there are usually paths to resolve them. Good luck, and I hope you get it sorted out soon!
