Adding a 16y/o male to my auto insurance….YIKES

Adding a 16-year-old boy to my auto insurance… YIKES!

I just got a quote from Allstate in North Carolina, and it’s FOUR TIMES what I’m currently paying. I nearly fell out of my chair! We’ve maintained a clean record for the last 17 years, with no tickets or accidents—just one minor incident with $2,000 in damages.

While I can find better rates with other companies, they won’t insure my home because my roof is over 10 years old, even though it comes with a 50-year warranty. This means I miss out on those valuable combined discounts. It’s starting to feel like insurance operates more like a mob than a legitimate service.

Does anyone have suggestions for adding a new teen driver, or should I just bite the bullet and pay the price? I’m also unsure if it would be beneficial for him to wait until he’s 18 to get his license, or if extending his permit driving with an adult would make a difference.

  1. It sounds like you’re dealing with quite a financial headache! Adding a teenager to your insurance can definitely lead to a spike in premiums. Here are a few suggestions that might help you navigate this situation:

    1. Shop Around: Since you’re already looking at other companies, continue to compare quotes. Each insurer has different criteria for calculating rates, so you may find a better deal elsewhere.

    2. Discounts: Check if the insurer offers any discounts for good grades, completing a driver’s education course, or for safety features (like anti-lock brakes) in your car.

    3. Higher Deductible: If you can afford a higher deductible, it could lower your premium significantly.

    4. Usage-Based Insurance: Some companies offer policies that track driving behavior. If your teen is a safe driver, you could save money with this option.

    5. Maintain a Clean Driving Record: Delaying the full license could help keep your premiums lower initially. If he can practice driving under your supervision until 18, it might be a wise strategy for some time.

    6. Policy Bundles: Consider bundling your auto and home insurance with the same company, if that option gives you a better deal.

    7. Talk to Your Current Insurer: Reach out to your agent and explain your concerns. They might have options or adjustments they can make to help reduce costs.

Insurance can feel frustrating, but with some persistence and exploring different options, you may find a solution that works for you. Good luck!
