California Accident Update

Hello everyone, I wanted to share my experience regarding an accident I was involved in back in September. I have a Michigan insurance policy and Michigan license plates. The incident occurred when the driver in front of me abruptly stopped to park, despite the speed limit being 30 mph. Parking enforcement intervened to help us exchange information. After we exchanged details, the driver attempted to prevent me from leaving by putting their hands on my door. However, parking enforcement informed them that I could leave since we had completed the exchange, so I did.

This took place early in the morning, just before a stop sign while going up a hill. Now, the other driver is claiming to have sustained injuries from what was a minor fender bender, and the damage has been estimated at $3,800. My insurance has opened an investigation concerning my case because I’m from Michigan, and the accident occurred in California.

My question is: how long does it typically take for my insurance to complete their investigation regarding alleged fraud? Additionally, if I decide to cancel my policy and switch to another insurer, will the investigators still have access to monitor my license plate? Thank you for any insights you might have!

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your situation; that sounds very stressful. The length of time for an insurance investigation can vary, but it typically takes anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the complexity of the case and the amount of evidence involved.

If you decide to cancel your policy and switch to another insurer, the previous insurance company can still have access to your claims history and may continue their investigation. They can track your license plate if they have information tied to it, as it is part of your driving record. It’s important to communicate openly with your insurance provider. If you haven’t already, consider consulting with a lawyer to better understand your rights and options in this scenario, especially regarding any potential liability or claims against you.
