Can I change my home and auto independent agent without notice?

Can I switch my home and auto insurance agent without any issues?

I recently received my home insurance renewal and noticed a hefty increase of $1,600. Living in North Texas, I’m aware that many of us are facing rising costs. I’ve been working with an independent agent for the past three years, but our interactions have only been over the phone, and communication hasn’t been ideal.

Deciding to explore my options, I reached out to a local independent insurance agency for a second quote. To my surprise, the new agent found me a much better deal! I’ll be saving $1,200 on my home insurance and $700 on my auto insurance.

I then contacted my previous agent to see if he could provide me with a more competitive rate. However, when he sent me the revised quotes, he informed me that my auto insurance was showing as “ineligible” on his end, yet I’m still saving money with the same auto insurance company through my new agent. Additionally, out of nine insurance companies he quoted for my home insurance, I was able to renew with three.

This makes me wonder if he may be steering me toward certain companies. Am I able to switch to a different independent agent locally, where I can meet face-to-face, without facing any penalties or issues? Just for context, I’ve never filed a claim on my policy.

  1. You can absolutely change your home and auto insurance agent without notice, and you typically will not face any penalties for doing so. Since you mentioned that you’ve found better rates with a new independent agent, it makes sense to proceed with them, especially considering the significant savings you’ve identified.

It’s not unusual for agents to have preferred partnerships with certain insurance companies, which might explain why your original agent’s quotes weren’t as competitive as what you found with the new agency. If you’re feeling more comfortable with face-to-face communication and the personalized service from your new agent, that’s a valid reason to make the switch.

Before making the change, just make sure to confirm the cancellation policies of your current policies and ensure there’s no lapse in coverage when transitioning to the new agent. Since you haven’t filed any claims, this should make the process smoother. Once you decide to go with the new agent, notify your previous agent that you will be moving your business.

Enjoy your savings and the new peace of mind!
