Can my employer be identified through my member ID?
I’m curious if someone can trace my health insurance back to my employer using either my member ID or my group policy ID. I’ve been asked to complete a form that requires this information and I want to ensure that the requesting party, who operates in the industry and likely has a high level of access, cannot discover that my coverage is employer-sponsored.
Can they see my employer with my member id?

It’s understandable to be concerned about privacy when sharing sensitive information like your health insurance details. Generally, your member ID and group policy ID can provide information about your health insurance plan, and depending on the access of the person or company requesting the info, they may be able to determine if your coverage is employer-sponsored.
However, specific access to such information can vary by state and the type of entity requesting it. If you’re worried about privacy, consider asking the requesting party why they need this information and whether they can provide an alternative way to verify your coverage without revealing employer details. Additionally, reviewing the privacy policy of your health insurance provider may help clarify what information can be disclosed and to whom. If you’re still unsure, it might be worth consulting with your HR department or a legal professional for guidance.
