Car Accident Update – Seeking Advice on GEICO Claim
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some quick guidance regarding my car accident situation. I’ve consulted with a lawyer, but he’s unavailable today, and I want to keep my claim progressing since our only family vehicle was totaled.
GEICO informed me that I can handle everything through them for now, as the other driver is considered “unknown” until the police report is released. They told me I’d need to pay my deductible upfront, but once they identify the other driver and connect with their insurance, they will pursue reimbursement on my behalf.
They have offered me what I believe is a fair settlement for my vehicle. I have an appointment today to see a doctor for my injuries. I want to double-check: If I accept the settlement for my truck, will that affect my lawyer’s ability to seek compensation for medical expenses from this unidentified driver?
I just want to confirm that accepting the vehicle settlement doesn’t close my entire claim.
Thanks in advance for any insights!
It’s great that you’re taking proactive steps to move your claim forward. From what you’ve described, accepting the settlement for your vehicle should not affect your ability to pursue further claims for medical expenses or other damages later on. Generally, accepting a settlement for property damage (like your car) is separate from any claims for personal injury.
However, it’s important to ensure that the settlement for your vehicle clearly states that it does not close the entire claim, including any medical expenses related to your injuries. Before you sign anything, make sure to clarify this with GEICO. It’s also a good idea to discuss this with your lawyer as soon as they are available to ensure that you have a comprehensive understanding of your rights and next steps.
Take care during your doctor’s visit, and best of luck with your recovery and the claim process!
