Car Insurance Help.

Car Insurance Assistance
I recently purchased a car in my hometown and will be driving it to my base in two weeks. I’ve just completed tech school, and the dealer is handling the registration for me in Michigan. However, my base is in Illinois, and I will be living there due to active duty. Can I keep my car insured in Michigan during this time? Where should I actually insure my car? Is there any military exception that allows me not to insure it in the state where I’m stationed? My driver’s license is still registered at my Michigan address. Thanks for your help!

  1. Congratulations on your new car! When it comes to car insurance, here are some key points to consider:

    1. Insurance Location: Generally, you should insure your car in the state where it is primarily located. Since you’ll be living in Illinois while on active duty, it would typically make sense to insure your car there. However, since the car is registered in Michigan, you should talk to your insurance provider about your specific situation.

    2. Military Exception: There are provisions for military members that may affect insurance requirements. Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), you may not be required to insure your vehicle in the state where you’re stationed. However, you still need to comply with insurance laws of the state where your car is registered.

    3. Contact Your Insurance Provider: Reach out to your current or prospective insurance company to explain your situation. They should be able to provide advice on the best way to insure your car given your circumstances. Be sure to ask about military discounts, which some insurers offer.

    4. Types of Coverage: Depending on your needs, you’ll want to choose an appropriate level of coverage, which may include liability, collision, and comprehensive, especially if you’re planning to drive the car regularly.

    5. Driver’s License: Since your driver’s license is still registered at your Michigan address, that can complicate matters a bit. Make sure to inform both states’ DMV about your active duty status and any changes in your residency.

In summary, while it may be possible to insure your car in Michigan, you’ll want to discuss your unique circumstances with an insurance agent to ensure compliance and to find the best policy for your needs. Safe travels and good luck with your new car!
