I might have accidentally put DEF in my fuel tank.
The day after Christmas, my girlfriend and I set off on a long road trip, around 500 miles, to visit her family. We stopped at a Buc-ee’s, which I just discovered has pumps for both diesel and DEF. Long story short, I filled up there and everything seemed fine until the return trip. About 30 minutes into our drive home, the truck suddenly warned me of reduced engine power for about 15 seconds. I was in the far left lane on the highway and was preparing to pull over when the engine died completely.
I had it towed to a mechanic, and they were able to take a look at it today. Unfortunately, they informed me that DEF somehow ended up in my fuel tank, and they’re going to check a few more things before contacting my insurance to see if they’ll cover the repairs. This is my first diesel truck, so I’m not sure if I just wasn’t paying attention or didn’t realize they have both DEF and diesel pumps.
Does anyone have experience with State Farm and whether they cover this type of issue? I have full coverage, but I know I messed up and would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!
I’m sorry to hear about your situation; that sounds incredibly frustrating! Unfortunately, putting DEF in the fuel tank can cause significant damage, so it’s good that you’re getting it checked out right away. As for your insurance, whether State Farm covers the damage will depend on your specific policy and their terms regarding fuel contamination. It’s worth reaching out to them directly to explain the situation and see what your options are. They might cover the repairs, depending on your coverage type. It might also help to get a detailed estimate from the mechanic to share with them. Good luck, and I hope it gets resolved quickly!
