Double Insured and can’t get a refund

Facing Double Insurance and No Refund

I’ve been with State Farm since I got my first car as a teenager, but after years of steady price increases, I decided to switch to Progressive in September. When I applied online, Progressive offered to send a cancellation letter to State Farm on my behalf to notify them of my new policy.

However, in January, I received another set of insurance cards from State Farm, which made me panic. After checking my bank account, I realized I was double insured from September to December.

I contacted Progressive to confirm whether they had sent the cancellation letter, and they assured me they had. They advised me to inform State Farm that I switched my insurance in September and to request a refund for the overlapping months.

Unfortunately, State Farm has refused to refund me for October and November, citing their cancellation policy, which only allows refunds for the past 30 days. However, my research suggests this isn’t accurate, and I believe I am entitled to a refund for those months. I’m planning to visit their office in person to request it again, and if that doesn’t work, I’m prepared to file a complaint with the Department of Insurance.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your experience with the double insurance situation. It can be really frustrating when insurance companies don’t seem to provide the resolution you’re looking for.

It sounds like you’ve taken some good steps already by reaching out to both State Farm and Progressive. Since you’re considering going to State Farm in person, make sure you bring any documentation you have, like the cancellation confirmation from Progressive and your insurance cards, to strengthen your case.

If they still refuse to refund you, filing a complaint with your state’s department of insurance is definitely a valid next step. They can provide guidance on how to navigate the situation and may intervene on your behalf. Additionally, consider reviewing State Farm’s terms and conditions regarding cancellations to see if there’s anything that directly supports your claim.

Ultimately, keep records of all correspondence you have regarding this issue. If you’re still unsatisfied after filing a complaint, you could explore reviewing the situation with a consumer protection agency or a legal advisor to discuss your options further. Good luck, and I hope you get this sorted out soon!
