Need Help with Car Insurance Issues

Hi everyone, I could really use some advice regarding a car insurance situation I’m facing.

I’m 18 years old, and my parents are divorced, each with their own vehicles and insurance policies. I currently drive my mom’s car, while my sister drives my dad’s. Lately, my parents have been having disagreements about our insurance.

My mom believes it would be more cost-effective to add both my sister and me to the same policy, with the idea that they would share the total cost. On the other hand, my dad insists that he can’t add me to his policy since I won’t be driving his cars. He points out that if I were to have an accident in my mom’s car, being on his policy wouldn’t provide any coverage because the car is registered under my mom’s name. He prefers to keep my sister under his policy and me on my mom’s.

Can anyone clarify how insurance policies work in this situation? Who’s correct? Thank you!

  1. It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tricky situation with your parents’ insurance policies. Here’s a breakdown of how car insurance generally works in situations like yours:

    1. Car Ownership and Insurance Coverage: Typically, insurance policies cover the vehicles listed on them. Your dad is correct that if you’re not driving his car, adding you to his policy may not be necessary or beneficial. Insurance generally provides coverage for specific cars and drivers.

    2. Adding Drivers to Policies: Your mom’s suggestion to add both you and your sister to her insurance might be a good way to save money since insurance companies often offer multi-driver discounts. However, it will depend on her provider’s rules and how they assess risk.

    3. Liability Coverage: If you’re driving your mom’s car and get into an accident, her insurance policy will usually cover you, assuming you’re listed as an authorized driver. If your dad does not list you on his policy because you don’t drive his vehicle, a total loss or liability claim in your mom’s car would not be covered by your dad’s insurance.

    4. State Laws and Regulations: Keep in mind that insurance laws can vary by state, so it’s important to consult with a local insurance agent to understand the best approach based on where you live.

Ultimately, the best solution may hinge on your family’s needs and discussions with an insurance agent who can provide clarity specific to your policies. Open communication with both of your parents about their concerns and priorities could also help clarify the situation and reach a compromise.
