Insurance Fraud

Insurance Fraud Update

I previously shared that a friend of mine had her car damaged while parked at my house. She filed an insurance claim that misrepresented the circumstances and the location of the car during the incident. The insurance company initially paid her $3,000, but it eventually came across as suspicious—likely due to the absence of a police report.

When investigators from the insurance company reached out to her, she admitted that she had lied. However, she also falsely claimed that I was aware of her fraudulent claim and that I had covered her deductible. In reality, I knew nothing about the claim until the investigation began, and I certainly didn’t pay her deductible. The only reason I was involved was because it was my car that accidentally hit her vehicle.

I thought the issue was resolved when I stopped hearing from the insurance company, but last week, I received a call from the Georgia Criminal Investigations Division of Insurance and Fire Safety. They informed me that I was now part of the ongoing investigation into her fraudulent claim. It seems she is trying to drag me into her deception.

I’m relieved to say that I no longer consider her a friend. I’m just going to sit back and watch as she tries to navigate the consequences of her actions.

She’s fully aware that her claim was illegal, especially as someone who works in banking and has dealt with numerous fraud cases. Given that she confessed to lying, I expect the state’s investigation to proceed swiftly. Since it’s escalated this far, I anticipate that it could be handed over to the district attorney for prosecution. Some police officers she knows may have misled her into thinking the state wouldn’t get involved, which likely made her believe the situation would just blow over.

I’m not sure if the state has contacted her yet, but I suspect her insurance company shared my contact details, along with their findings, including statements, videos, and images. This is my first experience with something like this, and I truly hope it’s the last. As someone who works in the medical field, I look forward to having my name cleared once and for all.

I just wanted to share this story as a cautionary tale about the risks of lying to an insurance company.

  1. It’s a tough situation you’re navigating, and it’s understandable that you feel frustrated and betrayed by your former friend. Insurance fraud is a serious issue, and it sounds like she made a big mistake that has significant consequences. It’s good that you’re distancing yourself from her, especially since her actions could potentially implicate you.

It seems like you’re doing everything right by cooperating with the investigation and ensuring that your side of the story is clear. Keep any documentation and communicate openly with the authorities to protect yourself. Hopefully, the investigation will resolve quickly, and you’ll be able to move on from this experience.

It’s also a reminder to everyone about the importance of honesty with insurance claims. Lying not only jeopardizes the claim and the individual involved but can also have wider implications for innocent parties caught up in the situation. Stay strong, and I hope you get a swift resolution!
