GEICO Insurance Help Needed
Hi everyone,
I just got a new car this weekend! I’m currently insured with GEICO and trying to update my policy. However, when I indicated that my new vehicle would replace the old one, I received a warning stating that my DMV requires me to transfer or surrender the license plates before I can remove the old car from my policy. My dealer mentioned that I can keep my license plates and simply get new tags.
Can anyone clarify what this means? Also, do I still need to pay for insurance on a car I no longer have? I’m located in Nevada.
Thanks in advance! 🙏
Hey! Congrats on the new car! 🎉
In Nevada, the DMV requires you to either transfer or surrender your license plates when you remove a vehicle from your insurance policy. Since your dealer mentioned you can keep the plates and just get new tags, that usually means you’ll just need to update your registration for your new vehicle with the DMV.
As for the insurance, you typically only need to pay for insurance on vehicles that you own or have in your possession. Once you update your policy to include the new car and remove the old one (assuming you follow the DMV’s requirements), you shouldn’t have to pay for insurance on the car you no longer have. Just make sure to clarify with GEICO that you’re removing the old vehicle and that the new one is properly covered.
It might be a good idea to contact GEICO directly to explain your situation and ensure you’re following all the necessary steps correctly. Good luck, and enjoy your new ride! 🚗✨
