Question about Insurance Coverage for Permit Driver
Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding insurance coverage. My younger sister has her car insured under my dad’s policy, but she only holds a learner’s permit and does not have a full license. I, on the other hand, am fully licensed and have my own separate car insurance policy.
If I take her out driving in her car and we happen to get into an accident, would my insurance be implicated since I’m the licensed driver? Or would her insurance be the one responsible since it’s her vehicle?
Thanks for your insights!
In the scenario you described, your sister’s car is insured under your dad’s policy, which generally means that if you were driving and an accident occurred, the insurance coverage would likely fall under that policy. However, since you are a licensed driver and the accident happened while you were driving, your own insurance could also come into play, depending on the specifics of the situation and the insurance policies involved.
Typically, in many states, the insurance of the vehicle owner (in this case, your dad’s policy) is primary in situations where the car is being driven with permission. So, if you were to get into an accident while driving her car, her car’s insurance would usually be responsible for covering the damages first.
It’s important to verify the specific terms and conditions of both policies because there could be clauses or exclusions that apply. It might be a good idea to have a conversation with both your dad’s insurer and your own to clarify how coverage would work in this situation, especially since your sister is still under a learner’s permit. Always best to be informed to avoid surprises!
