Renting a car for someone else

Renting a Car for Someone Else

Hi everyone, I was recently approached by someone who asked me to rent a car for them since the rental company only accepts credit cards and they don’t have one. I’m feeling a bit uneasy about it because I won’t be there to oversee things, and I’m concerned that if anything goes wrong with the car, it could impact my insurance rates.

If I list him as an approved driver and he purchases full coverage through the rental company, will any incidents be tied back to my insurance? I’d be okay helping him out, but I want to ensure that I won’t face any financial repercussions or damage to my business relationships if he mishandles the car while I’m not present.

Will I be held responsible if something happens?

UPDATE:

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve decided to decline his request.

  1. It sounds like you made a wise decision. Renting a car for someone else can definitely come with risks, especially if you’re not going to be there to oversee things. Even if the person is an approved driver and has their own insurance, there’s always the possibility that the rental company could hold you partially responsible for any issues that arise since the contract is in your name. It’s better to prioritize your own financial security and peace of mind. If the situation changes or they find a way to rent under their own name, that might be a safer option for both of you.
