Progressive Insurance Review
Here’s my candid review of Progressive Insurance, based on my personal experience in Phoenix, Arizona.
Initially, everything seemed to be going smoothly. I was paying for insurance on a vehicle that was registered in my name, primarily for commuting. Due to high rates for a 19-year-old, I added my mother to the policy.
However, things took a turn on December 23rd, 2024, when I was rear-ended while slowing down with the traffic. I documented everything—stepped out, recorded the scene, gathered the other driver’s information, and waited for the police to arrive. The following day, when I contacted Progressive to report the accident, I was informed that since I wasn’t the primary insured individual, my coverage was invalid, and thus, there would be no support.
My mother then filed a claim with Progressive, allowing for uploaded photos and an adjuster to get involved. They reached out to the other driver’s insurance, and I was told to wait for updates. I also filed a claim with the other driver’s insurer, Trexis, but it took three weeks just to hear back. When I finally contacted them, I was told my coverage was denied because the other driver had similar insurance complications. This all happened around January 10th.
Weeks later, I received a bill from Progressive for over $2000 due to the accident. They added me to my mother’s policy without asking for my consent, and this occurred after I had financed a vehicle using her address, although the policy was in my name. I initially paid for “full coverage,” which totaled $800 for the first month.
When I reached out to Progressive for clarification, they demanded proof of residence and pay stubs to validate my address, which I provided. My mother disputed the charges with her bank, and we managed to get that money back. However, Progressive then notified us of another balance due without specifying the amount or the payment deadline. We received a notice around February 8, but it arrived after February 20, leaving us just four days to settle an $800 balance.
Now, the deadline is looming, and if we don’t pay by tomorrow night, it will go to collections.
After getting a quote from Geico for full coverage on my vehicle for only $250, I’ve decided to switch to them moving forward. It’s the best rate I could find at 19 years old.
My experience with Progressive’s customer service has been frustrating. They often seem uninformed or unwilling to assist properly. I would rate their customer support a 4/10 since I often had to repeat information to multiple representatives, and it felt like there was a lack of communication on their end.
As for insurance pricing, I’d give them a 2/10. Their rates are exorbitant for minimal coverage, which feels unjustifiable.
In terms of usefulness, I’d rate them a 2/10 as well; they tend to direct you to staff who are unavailable or unhelpful.
Regarding professionalism, they earn a 0/10. There was a noticeable lack of apologies or an effort to truly listen to my concerns throughout this process.
Would I recommend Progressive? Absolutely not.
Now, I’m at a crossroads regarding the $800 balance. Should I just pay it and cut ties with this company for good? Any advice would be appreciated.
It’s disheartening to hear about your experience with Progressive Insurance. It seems like you faced a series of frustrating challenges that shouldn’t occur with any insurance provider. From the mishandling of your claim to the unexpected charges, it’s understandable that you feel this way.
It’s especially concerning that they added you to your mother’s policy without permission and that you had to provide proof of residence multiple times. Insurance should provide a sense of security, not add to your stress during such a difficult time following an accident.
As for the $800 balance, you might consider contacting customer service again to clarify the charges and express your concerns. Document everything and, if necessary, escalate the matter to a supervisor. If they continue to be uncooperative, you could also look into filing a complaint with your state’s insurance commissioner.
In the meantime, switching to Geico seems like a wise choice given the better rates you’re receiving. It’s vital to find an insurance company that values their customers and communicates effectively. Best of luck moving forward, and I hope you’re able to resolve this situation satisfactorily!
