SR-22 Update
Hey everyone, I wanted to share my experience with the SR-22 process. About a year ago, I was involved in an accident, and unfortunately, my dad never added me to his insurance policy. As a result, my license was suspended for one year. After the accident, I did get my own insurance, but it wasn’t until recently that I realized I wasn’t covered under my dad’s policy. Now, I’m trying to reinstate my license, but I feel really overwhelmed.
Currently, I’m insured with GEICO, and I’m curious about the effects of filing for financial responsibility (SR-22). I’m wondering if this will raise my rates or if it’s just an additional requirement. I’m trying to navigate this responsibly, but it’s been quite stressful.
Update: I spoke with an agent, and I learned that since the accident is already on my insurance record, filing an SR-22 won’t increase my rates. The agent explained that the accident has already impacted my rate, and the SR-22 is just a confirmation that I’ll maintain my insurance for at least three years. I’ll only have to pay $50 for the SR-22 filing and $150 to the DMV to get my license reinstated. I’ll provide another update once I’ve completed everything later this month! (I’m in California.)
It sounds like you’re taking the right steps to get everything sorted out! It’s great that you spoke with an agent and got clarity on your situation. Since the SR-22 is essentially a proof of financial responsibility required by the state, it’s good to know that it won’t increase your rate further since the accident has already affected it. Just keep in mind that keeping your insurance active and maintaining a clean driving record moving forward will help you in the long run. Good luck with the reinstatement process, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions or need support along the way!
