State Farm is dropping the ball making mistakes left and right and declaring my vehicle is totaled, sending payment, retracting payment, re-sending payment, and I am going to rip my hair out. Photos of Damage in the comments!

State Farm has been a complete mess lately, making one mistake after another with my claim. They initially declared my vehicle totaled, processed a payment, then canceled it, and now they’re sending another payment. I’m at my wit’s end! I’ve included photos of the damage in the comments.

Here’s a timeline outlining the back-and-forth between my insurance (Progressive) and the other driver’s insurance (State Farm):

Timeline:

01/02/2025 — Statement received from my partner.

01/13/2025 — State Farm ordered the wrong police report number.

  • Progressive requested the correct one.

01/21/2025 — Progressive reached out to State Farm.

  • State Farm accepted liability and noted in their system that they would arrange repairs.

01/26/2025 — Progressive picked up the vehicle for a partial inspection, which suggested it was likely repairable.

02/06/2025 — A Progressive supervisor called to confirm that State Farm was accepting liability.

  • The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard.

02/07/2025 — The other party involved in the accident emailed Progressive with the police report.

  • Progressive informed them that State Farm accepted liability.

02/21/2025 — A supervisor spoke with State Farm.

  • State Farm retracted their acceptance of liability but confirmed they were releasing the vehicle back to Progressive.

02/24/2025 — Voicemail received confirming the vehicle’s release to Progressive.

02/25/2025 — Progressive updated their records to reflect liability.

(On this day, I received a notice from State Farm retracting the payment they issued because they claimed they were not at fault anymore.)

The next day, I called State Farm to remind them that they had previously accepted liability, informed them of the payout amount, and noted that I had already signed and sent the title, which meant they couldn’t just reverse their decision. After some calls, they confirmed I was correct and agreed to reissue the payment and reaffirm liability.

02/27/2025 — Progressive received notice that the vehicle was repairable.

  • They called to inform me that because State Farm reversed their decision, Progressive would now cover the repairs instead of declaring it totaled.
  • I explained to them that it seemed State Farm hadn’t communicated this change clearly, and they agreed to follow up.

02/28/2025 — Progressive provided an update.

  • They informed me that State Farm had already processed paperwork declaring it totaled, so they couldn’t proceed with repairs.
  • State Farm insisted that based on the damage, repairs weren’t feasible and would be too costly. However, I’m puzzled by this because the damage seemed minimal, the airbags didn’t deploy, and I suspect they might be looking at the wrong photos.

The vehicle in question is a 2006 V6 Ford Mustang.

  1. Wow, that sounds incredibly frustrating! It’s hard to believe the back-and-forth with State Farm and the confusion over liability and repairable status. It’s understandable you’re feeling overwhelmed with all these communication issues and mixed messages.

It seems like there’s a clear disconnect between what State Farm is saying and the condition of your car as reported by Progressive. Have you considered escalating this issue further with State Farm? Sometimes speaking to a supervisor or a claims manager can help clarify things faster. Additionally, if you haven’t already, gather all the documentation and communication you’ve had—they may need to reevaluate based on the evidence of damage you’re providing.

It’s definitely worth pushing back since you’ve documented that they initially accepted liability. Hang in there, and hopefully, you can get this resolution soon. Best of luck!
