We really need some guidance.
My girlfriend (31) is currently in a difficult situation in Florida.
She has been working for her father’s business under the table while also caring for her son. She relies on Medicaid for her health insurance and requires regular infusions due to a genetic kidney condition she’s had since she was a child.
Complicating matters, she and her father are experiencing serious conflict, as he is abusive, and she’s looking to find a new job.
The problem is that any new job she starts will come with a 90-day waiting period for workplace insurance. During this time, she risks losing her Medicaid coverage and is understandably worried about her access to critical medications.
Is there any way for her to maintain her treatment coverage during the gap between starting a new job and her employer’s insurance taking effect?
I would greatly appreciate any advice or direction on where she can seek help.
If you have any questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask in the comments.
Thank you!
I’m really sorry to hear that your girlfriend is going through such a difficult situation. Here are a few options and resources that might help her navigate this tough time:
COBRA Insurance: If your girlfriend is able to get a job that offers health insurance, she might be eligible for COBRA coverage through her father’s business. COBRA allows her to continue her health insurance for a limited time after leaving an employer, though she will need to pay the full premium.
Special Enrollment Period: If she loses her Medicaid coverage, this might trigger a special enrollment period during which she could apply for different health insurance options through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Under the Affordable Care Act, having a qualifying life event may enable her to enroll in a plan outside of the typical Open Enrollment period.
State Assistance Programs: Florida may have additional healthcare assistance programs that provide temporary coverage to individuals in her situation. It’s worth looking into local resources or consulting with a social worker who may be able to provide guidance.
Community Health Centers: She could also look for community health clinics that offer services on a sliding scale based on income. They may provide the infusions she needs and can help her figure out how to access affordable care.
Patient Advocacy Resources: Organizations like Nephrology Social Work can provide guidance and help her navigate her specific situation regarding her kidney condition to ensure she gets the medications she needs. They may also have resources for financial assistance.
Legal Aid: If her father’s behavior is abusive, it might also be beneficial for her to speak to a local legal aid organization for advice regarding her living situation and any potential protection orders she may need.
Encouragement and support from you during this difficult time will be essential. Helping her reach out to these resources can make a significant difference in her situation. Best of luck to you both!
