Alberta, Canada Car Insurance Inquiry
I’m reaching out to any brokers or underwriters in Alberta.
In June 2021, I had my license suspended due to accumulating too many demerits, but it was reinstated in September 2021.
I’m curious—how long do insurance companies in Alberta take into account a license suspension when determining rates? It’s now 2025, and I was informed that the suspension would no longer affect my rate in 2024, but I’ve been experiencing continual delays and confusion. Any insights would be appreciated!
In Alberta, car insurance providers typically consider driving records for a period of three to five years when calculating premiums. Since your license was suspended in June 2021 and reinstated in September 2021, insurers would likely still be aware of this incident, but it should lessen in its impact as time goes on.
Most insurance companies will start to disregard a suspension after three years if your driving record remains clean. However, policies can vary between insurers, and some may hold on to the information for longer, especially if they assess your overall driving history.
If you’re being given inconsistent information, it may be helpful to directly contact the insurance company you’re dealing with and ask for clarification on their specific policies. Additionally, you might consider shopping around for quotes with different providers or consulting with an insurance broker who can help you find more competitive rates based on your driving history.
