[CA-USA] Do I need to include another driver on my car registration?
I’m currently listed as a driver on my parents’ auto insurance policy, and my car is jointly registered with my dad (both our names are on the registration and title).
I’m planning to buy a new car soon and I’m wondering if I can register it solely in my name while still being covered under my parents’ auto insurance, or if my dad needs to remain as a joint owner. I intend to be listed as the primary driver, and I’ll still be living with my parents, so the car will be at the same address.
For context, I’m in California and we use USAA for insurance.
Thanks!
In California, you can register a car solely in your name and still be covered under your parents’ auto insurance policy as long as you are listed as a driver on that policy. However, it’s generally recommended to notify your insurance company about the new vehicle to ensure that it’s properly covered.
Since you mentioned that you will still be living with your parents and the car will be parked at the same address, it is usually acceptable for you to register the car in your name alone. That said, adding your dad as a joint owner may make things simpler from an insurance perspective, especially if he has a more established driving history.
It’s best to communicate directly with USAA to confirm their policies regarding car ownership and insurance coverage. They can provide specific guidance and help you understand any implications of registering the car in your name alone.
