Can someone identify my employer through my member ID?
I’m curious if a person can find out that my health insurance is provided by my employer if they have either my member ID or my group policy ID. I’ve been asked to complete a form that requires this information, but I’m concerned that the individual or company requesting it will be able to trace my coverage back to my employer. Since they work in the industry, they likely have more access to this information.
It’s understandable to be concerned about your privacy. Generally, a member ID or group policy ID alone may not directly reveal the name of your employer. However, in the hands of someone with industry connections, it’s possible they could identify your plan or its source.
If you’re worried about disclosing this information, you may want to ask whether it’s absolutely necessary to provide your member or group policy ID. Depending on the context, you could inquire about alternative forms of identification that wouldn’t compromise your privacy. Ultimately, it’s important to weigh the relevance of the request against your comfort level with sharing that information.
