Car Insurance and Relocating Out of State
I’m currently insuring three cars and covering myself, my husband, and our teenage son. As I prepare to move out of state, my teenage son will remain here with his grandparents to finish school, taking one car with him. Can I keep him on our insurance policy, or will his grandparents need to include him on their own coverage?
When moving out of state, it’s important to understand how your car insurance policy may be affected, especially with your teenage son staying behind. Generally, you can keep your son on your insurance policy as long as he is still considered a dependent and is living at a different address for school. However, since he will have his own car, it might be worth discussing with your insurance provider whether it’s more beneficial for him to remain on your policy or for his grandparents to add him to theirs.
Here are a few things to consider:
Insurance Rates: Sometimes, having a teenager on a grandparent’s policy can lead to lower rates, especially if they have a long history with that insurance company.
State Regulations: Keep in mind that insurance regulations can vary by state, so you’ll want to check the requirements in both states.
Coverage Needs: Consider the coverage that your son will need while living with his grandparents. Ensure he has adequate coverage for his situation.
It’s a good idea to contact your current insurance provider to discuss your situation and get recommendations specific to your needs. They can help clarify the best course of action given your upcoming move and your son’s living arrangement.
