Car Totaled
Hi everyone, I recently was involved in a car accident where I was rear-ended by a commercial vehicle (a Chrysler Pacifica van, which unfortunately was carrying a deceased person) and subsequently hit the car in front of me. I was driving my 2015 Honda CRV with approximately 151,000 miles on it, which I own outright.
I’ve been informed that I will receive the value of my car, plus any money for salvageable parts once it goes to the junkyard. The only downside is that my seats are dirty. A lawyer mentioned that insurers often nitpick the value offered.
Has anyone had similar experiences? I would appreciate any insights or advice! I did a market value check in my area, and it seems to be worth about $5,000. Thanks in advance for your help!
I’m sorry to hear about your accident; that sounds like a really tough situation. When it comes to dealing with insurance and getting compensated for your totaled vehicle, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Understand Your Vehicle’s Value: You’ve already done some initial research on your car’s market value, which is great. Make sure you gather evidence, like listings of similar vehicles in your area to support your $5,000 estimate.
Pre-Accident Condition: While the dirty seats might be a concern, the insurance adjusters typically evaluate the overall condition of the vehicle prior to the accident. If your car was mechanically sound with no significant damages apart from the accident, that should work in your favor.
Documentation: Keep all records related to the accident, including police reports, insurance correspondence, and any medical records if applicable. This helps provide a complete picture of the incident.
Negotiation: Insurance companies often start with a lower offer, so it can be beneficial to negotiate. If they come back with an offer that feels low, don’t hesitate to push back and present your findings regarding the market value.
Salvage Value: If the vehicle is declared a total loss, you are generally entitled to the fair market value as well as any salvage value if applicable. Make sure to confirm that you will receive that amount for salvageable parts.
Legal Advice: If you feel overwhelmed or unsure, it might be worth consulting with a lawyer who specializes in auto accidents to help you navigate the process and ensure you are treated fairly.
Remember, it’s important to be persistent and keep advocating for your rights. Good luck, and I hope you get a resolution that works for you!
