Does my 16 year old need to be listed on all cars I own or just the ones he’ll be driving?

Does my 16-year-old need to be added to the insurance policy for all of our cars, or just the ones he will be driving? My son is about to get his driver’s license, and I own three vehicles: an SUV, a sports sedan, and my wife’s car, which is already insured. I’m planning to buy him his own car, but he may also drive the SUV from time to time. Should I add him to the policy for all three cars, or just the ones he will actually be using?

  1. It’s generally a good idea to add your son to the insurance policy for all cars he might drive, including your SUV, as well as his own vehicle when you purchase it. Most insurance companies require drivers to be listed on the policy for any vehicle they have access to, regardless of whether they regularly drive all of them.

Adding him to all relevant vehicles helps ensure that he is fully covered in case of an accident or incident in any of those vehicles. It can also prevent potential issues with your insurance company if a claim is filed and he wasn’t listed as a driver. It’s best to check with your insurance agent for their specific requirements and to discuss how it may affect your premiums.
