Double Insured and can’t get a refund

Double Insured and Struggling to Get a Refund

I’ve been with State Farm since my teenage years when I got my first car. However, after several years of consistent price increases, I decided to switch to Progressive in September.

When I applied online, Progressive offered to send a cancellation letter to State Farm on my behalf to notify them of my change in coverage.

Fast forward to January, and I received a new set of insurance cards from State Farm. Alarmed, I checked my bank statements and discovered that I had been double insured from September to December.

I reached out to Progressive to confirm whether they had sent the cancellation letter, and they assured me they did. They advised me to contact State Farm, inform them of my September policy switch, and request a refund for the overlapping months.

Long story short, State Farm is refusing to refund me for October and November, citing their cancellation policy, which states they can only process refunds for the last 30 days. However, upon further research, I’ve found that this isn’t accurate, and I believe I’m entitled to a refund for those months. I plan to visit them in person to discuss this further, and if I don’t get a satisfactory resolution, I am considering filing a complaint with the Department of Insurance.

Has anyone else experienced a similar situation? I’d appreciate any advice or insights!

  1. I’m really sorry to hear about your situation—dealing with double insurance can be so frustrating. It’s good that you’ve already reached out to both Progressive and State Farm for clarification.

Given State Farm’s response about their cancellation policy, it sounds like they’re sticking to their guidelines. However, many states have regulations regarding refunds for unearned premiums, which might work in your favor. When you visit them in person, it could be helpful to bring any documentation you have about the cancellation, including any emails or confirmations from Progressive as well as your insurance cards showing the overlap.

If they continue to refuse a refund, filing a complaint with your state’s department of insurance sounds like a solid next step. They can offer assistance and potentially mediate the situation on your behalf.

It might also be beneficial to check your state laws regarding insurance cancellations and refunds to better understand your rights in this situation. Hopefully, you can resolve this issue soon! Good luck, and keep us updated!
