flu and strep screen for $1000

I recently had an urgent care visit to obtain a sick note for work, and I was shocked by the charges:

  • $450 for a new patient visit
  • $350 for a respiratory flu test
  • $42 for a strep test
  • $80 for an emotional and behavioral assessment (which I believe was unnecessary)
  • $100 for a blood pressure check

Altogether, it added up to $1,000, which seems outrageously high and feels quite fraudulent. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

  1. I can definitely understand your frustration with those charges. It sounds like the costs for your urgent care visit were unusually high, especially for what seems like a standard procedure. It’s not uncommon for urgent care facilities to have varying prices, but that amount is certainly on the high end.

Many people have experienced similar issues with unexpected charges, especially when it comes to specific tests or assessments that might not seem necessary in the moment. It might be worth reaching out to the urgent care facility directly to ask for a detailed breakdown of the charges and to see if they offer any explanations or might be open to negotiate the bill. Additionally, checking with your insurance provider (if you have one) could help clarify what should be covered versus what you’re being billed for out of pocket.

You’re not alone in feeling like medical costs can sometimes feel opaque and excessive. It’s important to advocate for yourself and seek clarity on those charges!
