Insurance Advice Needed

Hey everyone,

I have a question regarding car insurance. I recently purchased a vehicle, and the dealership informed me that I need to be the policyholder for my insurance. Previously, I was on my mom’s insurance plan, which had excellent coverage, but I had to get my own policy.

Unfortunately, the rates for young drivers are insane, and despite having a clean record with no accidents or tickets, I find it ridiculously expensive. Would I face any issues if I switched back to being on my mom’s insurance? Would the car dealership find out about it? Is there anything they could do if I did?

I’m just trying to manage my expenses, especially with a new car payment and rent on top of everything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  1. It’s understandable that you’re feeling overwhelmed with the cost of insurance, especially being a young driver. Many insurance companies do consider age and driving experience when calculating premiums, which can make it tough for new policyholders.

To answer your question: technically, you can switch back to your mom’s insurance, but there are some important things to consider. If your new car is financed or leased, the lender usually requires that you maintain insurance in your own name. However, it’s worth discussing your situation with your mom’s insurance company. Sometimes, they may allow you to be added to her policy as a covered driver, which could help reduce costs.

Insurance companies may not necessarily know the specifics of your situation unless you tell them, but maintaining honesty is important. If they find out you weren’t listed as a driver when they’re supposed to know, it could lead to complications down the line, such as denied claims or issues with the coverage.

In the meantime, you might want to shop around for different insurance quotes or explore discounts for safe driving or bundling policies. Some companies have programs specifically for young drivers that could offer lower rates. Remember, communication with your car dealership, insurance provider, and your mom can help you find a solution that works for everyone!
