Insurance company wont have vehicle reappraised after incorrect information was sent to appraiser

Insurance Company Refuses to Reappraise Vehicle Due to Incorrect Mileage Information

I filed a third-party claim after someone hit my parked car in front of my house, and dealing with the insurance company has been a nightmare. Here’s the main issue:

The appraiser valued my car at 75,000 km more than its actual mileage. I saw the document they sent to the appraisal company while I was at the insurance office, so I know it’s incorrect. The agent told me he doesn’t want to request a new appraisal because it would take another 5-10 business days. I’ve made it clear that the timeline doesn’t matter to me; I just want the true value of my car so that I can be fairly compensated as intended by the insurance policy.

Instead, he suggested I hire my own appraiser, clearly trying to pass the responsibility off to me. It’s worth noting that my own insurance company is not the one paying this settlement—it’s the insurance of the person who totaled my car. Still, my insurance company, which is supposed to advocate for me, won’t even bother to get an accurate appraisal.

The initial settlement amount for that incorrect appraisal is $2,700 CAD, but similar cars with the mileage mine had typically sell for between $4,500 and $6,000.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with the insurance company. It’s unfortunate that they’re not addressing the appraisal error promptly, especially since the correct value is crucial for you to recover financially. It sounds reasonable that you expect them to ensure the appraisal reflects your car’s actual mileage.

You might want to consider escalating this issue within the company, possibly by asking to speak with a supervisor or a claims manager. Document all your communications and keep a record of the discrepancies you’ve noticed. If they still refuse to get another appraisal, you could look into filing a complaint with your local insurance regulator or seeking legal advice. You pay for your insurance to have support in situations like this, and it’s frustrating when they aren’t meeting their responsibilities. Stay persistent, and hopefully, you’ll get the resolution you deserve!
