Liberty Mutual – Can I Get a Refund for Incorrect Roof Age Information?
Our home was built in 2016, and we replaced our roof in 2022 after hail damage. Unfortunately, I just discovered that even though Liberty Mutual approved and paid for the roof replacement, they never updated our policy to reflect the new roof age. As a result, we’ve been paying nearly double our original policy rate for the past year. I only realized this issue after receiving my recent mortgage statement, which showed escrow shortages primarily due to the discrepancy between the predicted and actual insurance rates.
I switched to a new insurance provider (Progressive) earlier this week. However, I contacted Liberty Mutual again and received mixed messages from the representative. They mentioned that they could update our roof age if we provide proof of the work done. Yet, the rep also indicated that I might not be eligible for a refund for the overpayments since I should have informed them that the roof was replaced. They suggested that someone should have informed me about this during the claims process, but nobody did. Still, she encouraged me to submit the receipt and request a refund.
Has anyone successfully requested a refund in a similar situation? Our mortgage payment has increased by almost 25% due to this, and we are feeling the strain.
Edit: I appreciate everyone’s input—looks like I might be out of luck!
I’m sorry to hear about your situation with Liberty Mutual; that sounds really frustrating. It seems like you’ve been put in a tough position because of the lack of communication regarding your policy updates. It’s good that you got a new insurance provider, but I understand the financial strain from those higher payments due to the roof age discrepancy.
Regarding your inquiry about a potential refund, policies can differ widely between insurance companies, and sometimes it depends on how specific clauses are worded within your policy. While some people have been successful in obtaining refunds for similar issues, it often comes down to the insurer’s policies and the specifics of each individual case.
It might be worth formally submitting your request along with the documentation of your roof replacement. Even if the initial response was not encouraging, following up in writing could lead to a different outcome. You could also consider asking for a supervisor or a dedicated claims representative who might take a closer look at your case.
Additionally, if you feel you’re not getting anywhere with their customer service, you could consider reaching out to your state’s insurance commissioner or a consumer protection agency for guidance on how to proceed. They might be able to provide assistance or insight into the situation.
I hope you can find a resolution that works for you, and I wish you the best in your new insurance journey with Progressive!
