Need Assistance

Hi everyone! I have a question regarding a car that’s registered in my grandpa’s name. I’ve recently bought insurance for it under my name and am currently making monthly payments. However, my grandma is in Mexico and won’t be back until mid-June. Can I still drive the car while it’s registered under my grandpa’s name but insured under mine? I live in California. Thanks for your help!

  1. In California, it’s generally acceptable to drive a car that is registered in someone else’s name as long as you have insurance for it. Since you’ve purchased insurance under your name, you should be covered in the event of an accident. However, it’s important to have the owner’s consent to use the vehicle, which you likely have if it’s your grandpa’s car.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

    1. Insurance: Make sure your insurance policy allows you to drive the vehicle that is registered in another person’s name. You might want to double-check with your insurance provider to ensure there are no issues.

    2. Registration: While you can drive the car, it would be wise to initiate the process of transferring the registration into your name as soon as possible. This usually requires the signature of the current owner.

    3. Consent: As you mentioned that you have permission to use the car, just keep a record of that in case it is ever questioned.

    4. Documentation: Keep any relevant documents, such as your insurance card and any correspondence regarding ownership with you while driving, just in case you need to show proof.

If you have any further questions or concerns, it might be a good idea to contact the local DMV or your insurance agent for personalized advice. Safe driving!
