Northbridge Insurance Experience
I reside in Canada and have been a customer of Northbridge Insurance (formerly known as Zenith). About a year ago, they sent me an invoice for my insurance renewal for 2024. Since I had decided to move on and had no intention of renewing my policy, I opted not to pay it.
Fast forward to now, and I’m inundated with mail—some even registered—urging me to renew my policy and demanding payment for the previous year. I have no intention of paying for a service I didn’t want or use. In the event of needing to file a claim, it’s clear they would not have honored it since I hadn’t even paid for that coverage.
It feels like they are trying to pressure me into paying for something I deliberately chose not to continue. Am I wrong to think I owe them nothing? After all, if you don’t pay for a service, you shouldn’t expect to receive it—and that was my intention all along.
It sounds like you’re in a frustrating situation with Northbridge Insurance. You’re correct in your understanding that if you didn’t pay for the insurance, they wouldn’t have been obligated to cover any claims. In Canada, insurance companies typically send out renewal notices, and if you choose not to pay, you’re not bound to continue the policy. However, it’s worth noting that some insurers may send follow-up notices regarding unpaid premiums, especially if they believe you owe something for a previous term.
If you’ve clearly communicated your decision not to renew and have no intention of using their services, you shouldn’t feel pressured to pay for coverage you didn’t want or utilize. Consider documenting your correspondence with them and, if they continue with aggressive collection tactics, it might be helpful to reach out to a consumer protection agency or seek legal advice for clarification on your rights. You’re not delusional; it sounds like you’ve made a conscious choice about your insurance needs.
