Permit driver insurance question

Question about Permit Driver Insurance

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding car insurance. My younger sister’s car is insured under my dad’s policy, but she only has a learner’s permit and does not yet have a full license. I have my own car insurance policy and am fully licensed.

If I take her out driving in her car and we happen to get into an accident, would my insurance be responsible since I’m the licensed driver? Or would it be her policy that covers it since it’s her car?

Thanks for your help!

  1. In this situation, if you are driving your sister’s car and she has a learner’s permit, the insurance coverage would generally depend on a few factors:

    1. Insurance Policy Details: Typically, the insurance policy covering the car (your dad’s policy in this case) would likely be the primary coverage in the event of an accident. Since your sister is the owner of the car and the policy covers that vehicle, it should be responsible for any claims arising from an accident.

    2. Permitted Drivers: As a licensed driver, you should be allowed to operate her vehicle as long as you are permitted by the insurance policy and are following the laws related to learner’s permit usage. It’s essential to ensure that the policy allows for other licensed drivers to operate the vehicle.

    3. Liability: If an accident occurs while you are driving her car, the insurance for the car (your dad’s policy) would likely cover the damages. However, since you were in control of the vehicle when the accident happened, your liability might also come into play, depending on the specifics of the accident.

    4. Your Own Insurance: In some cases, your own car insurance could also provide secondary coverage, but this typically comes into play if the primary coverage (your dad’s policy) is insufficient to cover all damages.

To clarify your specific situation, it’s advisable to check the terms of both your dad’s insurance policy and your own. You may also want to contact the insurance provider for additional guidance, as they can give you the most accurate and relevant information regarding coverage in this scenario.
