Renting a car for someone else

Renting a Car for Someone Else

Hey everyone, I was recently asked to rent a car for someone because the rental company only accepts credit cards, and they don’t have one. I’m a bit concerned about the potential repercussions since I won’t be present if anything goes wrong with the vehicle. If I add them as an approved driver and they purchase full insurance from the rental company, will this protect my insurance from being affected if something unexpected happens? I’m okay with helping out, as long as there’s no risk to my finances or professional relationships due to their actions in my absence.

Could this come back to haunt me if they were to mess up?

UPDATE:

Thanks for the advice, but I’ve decided to decline the request.

  1. It’s definitely wise to be cautious in situations like this. Even with someone listed as an approved driver and purchasing full insurance from the rental company, there can still be some risk involved. Some rental agreements might allow the rental company to hold the original renter (you) accountable for damages or incidents, depending on the terms and conditions. In some cases, your insurance might still be affected if a claim is filed, even if you weren’t driving the vehicle.

It’s good that you decided to decline the request—it’s better to prioritize your own financial security and peace of mind. If you’re ever considering a similar situation in the future, it might be helpful to read the fine print of the rental agreement and check with your insurance provider for any potential implications. Better safe than sorry!
