Soliciting, private messages and you

Reminder: Solicitation and Private Messaging Rules

This is a gentle reminder about the guidelines for our subreddit. There is absolutely no reason to suggest contacting another user privately, particularly when they are asking questions about coverage or filing a claim. Here’s the key rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is not allowed. This includes asking others to send you private messages, offering quotes for insurance coverage, or trying to persuade agents or clients to choose a specific carrier. Our goal here is to create a space where users can exchange information and ask questions without the concern of being solicited by agents. This applies to everyone—including adjusters, underwriters, and brokers—as we do not vet participants.

If you’re subscribed to this subreddit, you’ve likely seen a version of this message before.

If you think this doesn’t pertain to you, please reconsider. There are no exceptions to this rule, including the excuse of “but I was the one who asked them to PM me!” This subreddit is designed as a safe space for inquiries related to insurance, not as a platform for anyone to profit, whether they’re agents, public adjusters, software vendors, personal injury attorneys, headhunters, diminished value experts, or anyone else who isn’t here to provide unsolicited help.

If you receive a message from someone proposing a business arrangement—such as quotes for insurance, legal assistance (yes, there are unscrupulous lawyers who may attempt to solicit), damage assessments, etc.—please notify the moderators through mod mail or in this thread. It’s also important to report such messages to the admins, although we won’t see that report. We take these issues very seriously.

We truly dislike having to ban users. In fact, it’s the complete opposite of what motivated us to become moderators. However, we don’t screen users before they post, and we will enforce this rule when it is violated.

With that in mind, we are proud of our vibrant community that is eager to help others while also ensuring that those who disregard our rules are held accountable. Thank you to everyone for contributing to a supportive environment for those navigating the insurance landscape while keeping opportunists at bay.
