State Farm is dropping the ball making mistakes left and right and declaring my vehicle is totaled, sending payment, retracting payment, re-sending payment, and I am going to rip my hair out. Photos of Damage in the comments!

State Farm is seriously dropping the ball. They’re making one mistake after another with my claim, declaring my vehicle totaled, sending and retracting payment, and it’s driving me crazy. I’ve attached photos of the damage in the comments!

Here’s a timeline detailing the back-and-forth between my insurance (Progressive) and the at-fault party’s insurance (State Farm):

Timeline:

01/02/2025 — Initial statement provided by my partner.

01/13/2025 — State Farm requested the wrong police report number.
– Progressive ordered the correct one.

01/21/2025 — Progressive reached out to State Farm.
– State Farm accepted liability and noted that they would set up repairs.

01/26/2025 — Progressive picked up the vehicle for a partial inspection, leading to the conclusion that it was likely repairable.

02/06/2025 — A supervisor from Progressive called State Farm to confirm acceptance of liability.
– The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard.

02/07/2025 — An email from the other driver in the accident was sent to Progressive with the police report attached.
– Progressive informed him that State Farm accepted liability.

02/21/2025 — A supervisor at Progressive spoke with State Farm.
– State Farm reversed its acceptance of liability but confirmed they were releasing the vehicle back to Progressive.

02/24/2025 — Voicemail received confirming the release of the vehicle to Progressive.

02/25/2025 — Progressive updated the liability status to accept responsibility.
(On this day, I was notified by State Farm that they were retracting the funds issued as they no longer considered themselves at fault and changed their stance.)

02/26/2025 — I called State Farm to remind them they had previously accepted liability, informed them of the amount they were supposed to pay, and mentioned that I had already sent the title. After some calls, they confirmed I was correct and agreed to reissue the payment and accept liability again.

02/27/2025 — Progressive received notice that the vehicle would be repairable.
– They called me to say that since they are now accepting liability (after State Farm reversed their earlier decision), they would handle repairs rather than totaling the vehicle. I pointed out that it seemed State Farm hadn’t communicated their new decision to Progressive, so they followed up.

02/28/2025 — I got an update call from Progressive.
– They informed me that because State Farm had already processed the vehicle as totaled, repairs would not be possible.
– State Farm is adamant that based on the damage, repairs would be too costly. They also claimed to have determined the vehicle was totaled based on damage photos. I’m puzzled because the damage is minimal; the airbags didn’t deploy, and I’m concerned they might be looking at the wrong images.

The vehicle in question is a 2006 V6 Ford Mustang.

  1. It sounds like you’re going through an incredibly frustrating ordeal with State Farm and Progressive. Insurance claims can be complicated, and it’s unacceptable for you to experience such inconsistent communication and decisions regarding your vehicle. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed when different parties are giving conflicting information, especially when it involves something as significant as your car being deemed a total loss.

It’s good that you’ve kept detailed records of all communications, as this will help you advocate for yourself. If you haven’t already, consider escalating the issue within State Farm. Reach out to a claims manager or ask for a supervisor to review your case directly. It might also be helpful to have all your documentation and photos ready to clarify the situation, especially if it involves proving that the damage is minimal.

Additionally, consider asking for a second opinion on the damage assessment if possible. Sometimes having an independent or a third-party inspection might provide a new perspective on the repairability of your vehicle. Hang in there, and stay persistent – you deserve a fair resolution!
