TD Auto Insurance Claim Inquiry
Hello everyone,
I’m currently in Toronto, Canada, and own a 2019 Audi Q3 insured under my name. While I’m on vacation, my roommate, who recently sold his car on January 24, 2025, due to high repair expenses, drove my Audi for an emergency meeting at work with my permission.
Unfortunately, he was involved in an accident. He was completely not at fault; he was stopped at a stop sign when another driver came speeding from the left and collided with him, damaging the back tire. I have a video that clearly shows he wasn’t at fault. The tire is now tilted inward. I took the car to Mr. Lube for an estimate, and they quoted $10,000 for repairs, including the axle, hub, and control arm.
Here’s my question: My roommate doesn’t have his own insurance since he sold his car last month and isn’t listed on my insurance policy either. He has only driven my car a couple of times. Will TD cover the damages under DCPD, or could there be complications because my roommate isn’t on my insurance?
Thanks for your help!
It’s good that you have video evidence of the accident, as that will help in the claims process. In Ontario, the Direct Compensation Property Damage (DCPD) system generally covers damages to your vehicle caused by another driver when they are at fault. Since the other driver was at fault in this situation, you should be able to file a claim under your TD auto insurance.
However, since your roommate isn’t listed on your insurance policy, there could be some complications. Generally, insurance policies only cover individuals who are listed as drivers. It’s important to contact TD Insurance directly to explain the situation and confirm coverage, as they will provide the most accurate guidance based on your specific policy details.
Make sure to have all necessary documents ready, including the video evidence, estimates for the repairs, and any information related to your roommate’s use of the vehicle at the time of the accident. They will guide you through the claim process and clarify any concerns regarding your roommate’s lack of insurance coverage.
