Want to be able to take car off insurance while it’s still registered in Rhode Island

I’m looking for advice on how to temporarily remove insurance from my vehicle while keeping it registered in Rhode Island. I own a 1998 4Runner that I only use during the spring and summer months. From what I understand, in Rhode Island (and possibly other states), if you don’t keep insurance on your car, the state might cancel your registration, which means I’d have to pay to re-register it when I’m ready to drive again. Is there a way around this issue? I’m open to registering my vehicle in another state, as long as it doesn’t require me to establish residency. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

  1. Unfortunately, in Rhode Island, you generally cannot simply turn off insurance on a vehicle while it remains registered. State law requires that vehicles must have insurance coverage to remain legally registered. If you remove your insurance and your car is still registered, you could risk penalties and fines.

One possible workaround is to consider a “storage” or “comprehensive only” insurance policy, which typically covers events like theft, vandalism, and natural disasters while the vehicle is not actively being driven. This way, you can maintain insurance without it being a full coverage policy, and it may be less expensive.

If you’re considering registering your vehicle in another state, be sure to research that state’s specific registration and insurance laws. Some states do allow for more flexibility with vehicle insurance requirements, but registration without establishing residency can be tricky.

Lastly, reach out to your insurance agent or company. They may have options or recommendations based on your situation specifically for vehicles that aren’t used year-round. Good luck!
