Waterproof Vinyl Question

Question About Waterproof Vinyl Flooring

Hi everyone,

I recently experienced a pipe burst in my attic that caused flooding in my home for about 40 minutes. Unfortunately, this resulted in damage to the insulation in the attic, ceilings in 80% of my home, walls, and baseboards. My insurance adjuster from Farmers believes the floors are waterproof vinyl and claims they haven’t been affected, so they can simply be dried out. However, when the baseboards were removed, I noticed that the corners of the vinyl flooring are peeling up, and there’s water trapped underneath. This issue seems to be consistent throughout the entire house. I’ve looked online but couldn’t find much information on this. Has anyone experienced something similar? Can waterproof vinyl flooring show no signs of damage underneath? As a new homeowner, I’m still learning about these things. Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. I’m sorry to hear about the flooding in your home; that sounds incredibly stressful. Regarding your question about waterproof vinyl flooring, while it is designed to resist moisture, it’s important to note that “waterproof” doesn’t always mean “impervious.” If water gets trapped underneath or in the seams, it can cause issues like peeling or warping.

Since you’ve noticed the corners of the floors peeling up and you see water underneath, it’s possible that the flooring did sustain some damage. Moisture trapped under vinyl can lead to mold growth and further deterioration over time.

It would be a good idea to consult with a flooring professional who can assess the situation more closely. They may recommend removing a portion of the flooring to check for any hidden damage or mold growth. Make sure your insurance adjuster is aware of the issues you’ve noticed; they may need to reassess their initial evaluation. Document everything with photos and notes to support your discussion with them.

If you’re uncertain about what steps to take next, reaching out to a water damage restoration specialist may also be beneficial. They can help ensure that any lingering moisture is addressed properly to prevent future problems. Best of luck, and I hope your home gets restored soon!
