Auto Insurance Assistance Needed
I live in California and need some guidance. My dad, who is 85 years old, hasn’t driven in the past three years. He is the policyholder for both my parents’ car and my car. Can I remove him from both policies? My parents and I live in the same apartment. If I make this change, will my insurance rates decrease? Also, will I need to get new policies since he is currently listed as the policyholder on both? Thank you!
It’s great that you’re looking into your auto insurance options! In California, you can usually remove your dad from the insurance policies for both vehicles if he hasn’t been driving and is no longer in need of coverage. Here are a few things to consider:
Removing the Policyholder: You should be able to remove your dad as the policyholder. Generally, one person can be listed as the primary driver for each vehicle, and you or your mom could take over as the primary policyholder.
Will Insurance Go Down?: There’s a possibility that the insurance premium might decrease after removing him, especially if he has a higher risk profile due to age or if he hasn’t been driving recently. It’s best to contact your insurance agent to see how the change might affect your rates.
New Policy vs. Update Existing Policy: You may not need to get a completely new policy, as many insurance companies allow you to make changes to an existing policy. However, it depends on the insurer’s policies, so you should discuss this with them directly.
Living Situation: Since you all live in the same apartment, be sure to mention that to your insurer as it may affect the coverage and rates, especially if you’re the main driver of one of the vehicles.
I recommend reaching out to your insurance provider to discuss your specific situation; they can help you understand the best course of action.
