Home Insurance Issues in Texas

Is anyone else having a tough time securing home insurance?

We’re closing on a property on April 10th in a rural area about an hour from Austin. It’s far enough from the coast to avoid hurricane risks, and there’s minimal threat from tornadoes or flooding.

The house was built in 1936, sits on 2.75 acres, has a new roof, and is in excellent condition.

However, we’ve been receiving quotes ranging from $5,000 to $8,000, which seems outrageous to me. I thought most people paid around $3,000 or less.

For context, we’re a 25-year-old married couple with a solid insurance credit history. Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. It sounds like you’re navigating a frustrating situation with home insurance! Unfortunately, Texas has seen some fluctuations in insurance rates, especially with factors like higher claim rates and severe weather elsewhere in the state impacting overall costs.

Your rural location and the condition of your home are definitely positives, but finding the right provider can still be tricky. It might help to shop around a bit more, as different carriers can have different underwriting standards. You could also consider reaching out to local independent insurance agents who specialize in your area—they can often get you quotes from multiple providers and may be able to find you a better deal.

Additionally, check if bundling options with auto insurance or other policies can bring down your premium. Don’t hesitate to ask about any available discounts for things like home security systems or claims-free history. Hang in there; hopefully, you’ll find a solution that works for you!
