Auto Dealer Fraud (TX)

Auto Dealer Fraud (TX)

In December 2024, I traded in my vehicle. On January 2, 2025, I received a call from Progressive inquiring if I wanted to start repairs on the car I had just traded in. I’ve never been a customer of Progressive. When I informed them that I no longer owned the car, they mentioned that my information appeared when they checked the tags. Is it possible that the dealership sold my old car with my tags still attached? I’m confused as to why the temporary tag from the dealership would still contain my information.

  1. It sounds like you’re dealing with a frustrating situation. It’s possible that the dealership didn’t properly transfer the ownership of your traded-in vehicle, which could explain why Progressive contacted you about it. When a dealership sells a vehicle, they typically handle the title transfer and registration with the state. However, if those steps weren’t completed correctly or promptly, it’s possible that your information could still be linked to the vehicle.

Regarding the temporary tag, it usually reflects the dealership’s information and may have your name on it if they didn’t update the registration properly before selling the car. You should reach out to the dealership to clarify what happened with the title transfer. It may also be a good idea to check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to ensure that the vehicle has been officially removed from your name.

If the dealership did not follow proper protocols, you may want to discuss your options for resolving any issues that arise from this situation. Keeping documentation of your trade-in and any communications you have with the dealership can be useful.
