Uncertain About My Coverage
I recently traveled to New Zealand and rented a car through booking.com using their insurance via rentalcover.com.
I initially rented the car from January 13th to January 30th. When I returned the car on the 30th, I asked if I could keep it for an additional two days, and they agreed, charging me for that extension. This updated my rental agreement to cover January 13th to February 1st. However, instead of extending my original insurance, I mistakenly booked a new insurance policy for the two extra days (January 31st to February 1st) on the same site. I realize this wasn’t the best choice.
Essentially, I now have two separate insurance policies: one from January 13th to January 30th, and another from January 31st to February 1st.
On February 1st, I noticed a scratch on the windshield, and upon returning the car, I was charged 1000 NZD for the damage. I’m concerned about potential complications with the insurance because I opted for a new policy instead of amending the existing one.
I’m wondering how best to approach this before I make a claim. I did ask the rental company for two separate agreements, but they refused.
My plan is to be honest and file a claim with the second insurance for the period of January 31st to February 1st, explaining that I noticed the scratch on February 1st when a stone hit the windshield.
Does anyone have insights on whether this approach is advisable? The rental company charged me approximately $600 for the damage.
It sounds like you’re in a tricky situation, but honesty is typically the best policy in these cases. Here are some steps you could consider taking:
Review Your Policies: Before proceeding, carefully read both insurance policies from rentalcover.com to understand their coverage details, especially regarding damages and any clauses related to the start and end dates of the coverage.
Document Everything: Gather all relevant documentation, including rental agreements, receipts, and any correspondence with the rental company and the insurance provider. Take pictures of the damage and make notes about when and how you noticed it.
Contact Rentalcover.com: Reach out to rentalcover.com and explain your situation clearly. Provide them with your two insurance policies and ask them how to proceed with the claim. They may have specific procedures for situations like yours and could provide clarity on whether your new policy would cover the incident.
File a Claim: If you decide to file a claim under the second insurance policy, be honest about the timeline. Explain that you noticed the scratch while returning the car on February 1st and that it was within the coverage period of your second policy.
Stay Calm and Patient: Insurance claims can take some time to process, especially if there’s any ambiguity. Be prepared for potential questions or requests for additional documentation.
Consult with Others: If you’re unsure, consider discussing the situation with someone who has experience in insurance claims or seeking advice from a consumer protection agency.
Ultimately, the key is to be transparent with the insurance company while following their guidelines and addressing the situation as it is. Good luck!
