Help! Progressive sucks :(

I’m in a tough situation with Progressive 😞

After an auto accident, it seems they may be looking to drop my coverage. Let me give you some context. My car policy, registration, and license are all registered in Tennessee (I’ll keep it vague for privacy), but I work in NYC. While I have a secondary residence in NYC, my primary address is still in Tennessee. I switched to Progressive at the start of the year, and I recently got into a car accident in NYC. The police report indicates that both drivers share some fault.

When I called to file a claim, my agent wasn’t very supportive and seemed to imply that I was at fault, which was a new experience for me. After I mentioned that I’m only in NYC for work, she said she would submit my address change to underwriting, which struck me as odd. Fast forward a week, and I finally managed to schedule a call with her.

During our conversation, she mentioned that they’re still waiting on underwriting to decide how to proceed and hinted that I might be dropped as a customer. I’m left wondering if this suggests something about insurance fraud, but I’m genuinely perplexed. I explained that I don’t always use my car in the city due to the many transportation options available.

I’d really appreciate any advice. Should I consider hiring a lawyer, or just wait to see what happens? Can they really drop my policy out of the blue like this? I feel overwhelmed and am honestly struggling every day with this. Thank you for any support or guidance you can offer.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear about your situation; that sounds incredibly stressful. Here are a few steps you can consider taking:

    1. Understand the Terms of Your Policy: Review your insurance policy to see what it says about coverage when you’re out of state. It might clarify whether you’re still covered when using your car while working in NYC.

    2. Communicate Clearly: Keep communicating with your insurance agent and try to get everything in writing. This could include the details of your report, any claims made, and responses from underwriting. Document every interaction for your records.

    3. Consult an Insurance Expert: It may be beneficial to speak with an independent insurance agent or a consumer advocate who can help explain your rights and options. They can provide clarity on whether Progressive’s actions might be justified.

    4. Legal Advice: If you sense that your situation might escalate or if you get any formal notice from Progressive, consulting with a lawyer who specializes in insurance issues could be wise. They can help you understand the implications and potential actions you can take.

    5. Explore Other Options: While dealing with this situation, it might be worth exploring other insurance options if you end up needing to find a new provider. Other companies may offer more favorable terms depending on your situation.

    6. Stay Calm and Informed: It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed, but try to stay calm. Gather as much information as you can and formulate a plan as you learn more about your options.

Remember, you have rights as a policyholder, and it’s important to advocate for yourself during this process. You’re not alone, and there are resources available to help you through it.
