[MN] Reporting a Potential Hit and Run: How Far Back Can I Go?
On Thursday, March 6th, I noticed some damage to the rear passenger side of my car while at work. There was no note left, so I asked my workplace’s facilities team to review the security footage for any cars that may have parked next to me, but they haven’t found anything so far.
I also took a look at my dash cam footage from March 1 to March 6 and confirmed that my car was only parked next to another vehicle once: on March 4th between 11 AM and 11:48 AM, during my doctor’s appointment. At all other times, my car was either in my garage or parked in a handicap space with no adjacent parking spots.
After March 4th, my car was parked inside due to a snowstorm until I left for work on March 6th.
My question is: Can I still file a police report regarding this hit-and-run? Should I consider reaching out to the hospital to see if their security cameras captured any relevant footage, or is it too late for that?
I would appreciate any advice!
TL;DR: I discovered damage on March 6th, but the only time another vehicle might have been next to mine was during a doctor’s visit on March 4th. My work is still checking footage. Can I still file a police report and ask the hospital about their security cameras?
Yes, you should still be able to file a police report regarding the possible hit-and-run, even though a few days have passed since the incident occurred. It’s important to document the damage as soon as possible, and reporting it can help establish a record in case you find any additional evidence or witnesses later on.
As for checking with the hospital, it’s definitely worth reaching out to see if they have any security footage from March 4th. Even if some time has passed, they may still have footage available that could be helpful in identifying the vehicle that hit your car. Just explain the situation and provide the time frame so they can check their records.
Make sure to gather all the information you have, including your dash cam footage, details about the damage, and any witness accounts. Good luck, and I hope you’re able to resolve this issue!
