[MN]How far back can I report a possible hit and run?

Title: How Long After an Incident Can I Report a Possible Hit and Run?

I discovered some damage on the rear passenger side of my car on Thursday, March 6, while I was at work. Unfortunately, there was no note left, so I asked the facilities team at my workplace to review security footage for any vehicles that may have parked beside me. So far, they haven’t found anything.

To gather more information, I went through my dash cam footage from March 1 to March 6. I found that my car was only potentially parked next to another vehicle once, on March 4, between 11 AM and 11:48 AM, when I was at a doctor’s appointment. During the rest of the time, my car was either in my garage or in a handicap spot with no other vehicles nearby.

From the moment I got home on March 4 until I left for work on March 6, my car was parked indoors because of a snowstorm.

I’m wondering if I can still file a police report concerning this possible hit-and-run. Would it be worthwhile to contact the hospital to see if their security cameras captured anything, or is it too late to pursue this?

I would appreciate any advice!

Summary: I found damage on March 6, but the only time another vehicle was possibly parked next to mine was on March 4 at a doctor’s office. My workplace is still checking video footage. Can I still file a police report and inquire about hospital security footage?

  1. Yes, you can still file a police report for a possible hit-and-run, even if some time has passed since the incident. It’s best to report it as soon as you realize there’s damage, as it gives law enforcement a better chance to investigate. When you file the report, be sure to provide them with as much detail as possible, including when the damage likely occurred and any information regarding the dash cam footage.

Contacting the hospital to inquire about security camera footage is also a good idea. If the footage is still available, it could potentially provide valuable evidence regarding the incident. Be sure to explain the situation clearly when you reach out, and ask if they have records that could help identify the vehicle involved.

Overall, the sooner you act, the better your chances of gathering useful information. Good luck!
