Car Rental Insurance in Ontario

Car Rental Insurance in Ontario

I’m curious about car rental companies in Ontario, Canada. Do they automatically include the ‘Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule’ for their customers? I understand that third-party liability insurance is provided by default, as it’s required for driving on the road. However, what about accident benefits?

While these are typically part of a standard auto insurance policy, do they also come with rental car agreements?

  1. In Ontario, car rental companies typically provide basic third-party liability coverage by default as this is a requirement to legally drive a vehicle. However, when it comes to Statutory Accident Benefits (SABs), the situation is a bit different.

Rental cars in Ontario do not automatically include Statutory Accident Benefits in the same way that personal auto insurance policies do. Instead, these benefits are usually covered under your personal auto insurance policy if you have one. If you are renting a car and you do not have a personal policy or your policy does not include accident benefits, you might want to consider purchasing additional coverage from the rental company to ensure you are protected.

It’s always a good idea to check the specifics with both your personal auto insurance provider and the rental company to understand what coverage you have and what additional options might be available.
