Help! Progressive sucks :(

I’m really struggling with my insurance situation right now, and I could use some advice. I’ve been with Progressive since the beginning of this year, and after having a car accident in NYC, I’m facing the possibility of them canceling my policy. Just to give you a little context—my car policy, registration, and license are in Tennessee, though I work in NYC and have a second home there.

After the accident, which the police report states was a shared fault, I called to file a claim. Unfortunately, the agent I spoke with wasn’t very helpful and made me feel like I was to blame, which was really disheartening. When I mentioned that my primary residence is in Tennessee but I was in NYC for work, she said she needed to submit an address change to underwriting, which I found odd.

Fast forward a week, and during our scheduled call, she told me that underwriting is still reviewing my case and that there’s a chance they might drop me. I’m confused and worried—are they implying there’s potential insurance fraud? I explained that I often don’t have my car in the city due to all the transportation options available.

I’m at a loss here. Should I consult with a lawyer, or is it better to wait and see what happens? Can they really just cancel my policy unexpectedly? I’m feeling overwhelmed and anxious about the whole situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. I’m really sorry to hear about your experience; that sounds incredibly stressful. Here are a few steps you might consider taking:

    1. Understand Your Policy: Review your auto insurance policy thoroughly to understand the terms, especially regarding residency and the use of your vehicle in different locations. This can help clarify whether Progressive has a legitimate reason to drop you.

    2. Document Everything: Keep detailed records of all communications with your agent and any claims you’ve filed. Note dates, times, and what was discussed. This can be important later if you need to appeal their decision.

    3. Contact Customer Service: If your agent isn’t being helpful, try reaching out to Progressive’s customer service line to speak to someone else. Sometimes a different representative can provide better assistance.

    4. Consult a Lawyer: If you feel uncertain about the situation, especially regarding potential legal implications, it might be wise to consult a lawyer who specializes in insurance issues. They can provide you with tailored advice and help you understand your rights.

    5. Explore Other Options: In case they do decide to drop you, it might be helpful to start researching other insurance companies. Having options available can help reduce your stress if you need to switch providers quickly.

    6. Stay Calm: While it’s easier said than done, try to take care of yourself. Stress can take a toll, so find ways to cope—whether it’s talking to friends, exercising, or finding a relaxing hobby.

Remember, they can’t just drop you without a valid reason, and you have rights as a policyholder. Hang in there, and I hope things get sorted out for you soon!
