[MN]How far back can I report a possible hit and run?

[MN] How long do I have to report a potential hit-and-run?

On Thursday, March 6th, I discovered damage to the rear passenger side of my car while at work. There was no note left, so I asked my workplace’s facilities team to review security footage for any vehicles that might have been parked next to mine. Unfortunately, they haven’t found anything so far.

I also went through my dash cam footage from March 1 to March 6 and confirmed that my car was only next to another vehicle once. This occurred on March 4th between 11 AM and 11:48 AM while I was at a doctor’s appointment. During the other times, my car was either in my garage or parked in a handicap spot with no adjacent spaces.

After I returned home on March 4th, my car stayed inside due to a snowstorm until I left for work on March 6th.

My question is: Am I still able to file a police report for this hit-and-run? Would it be worthwhile to reach out to the hospital to see if their security cameras captured anything, or is it too late to look into this?

I would appreciate any advice!

TL;DR: I noticed damage on March 6th, but the only time another car was next to mine was on March 4th at a doctor’s office. My workplace is checking footage. Can I still report this to the police and inquire about security footage at the hospital?

  1. You can definitely still file a police report for a possible hit-and-run, even if a few days have passed since the incident occurred. It’s important to document the damage and provide any information you have, including the time frame when your car could have been hit.

Contacting the hospital to see if their security cameras captured anything could be beneficial, especially since you know the specific timeframe when your car might have been struck. Security footage can often provide valuable evidence, and it’s worth a try. Just be sure to explain your situation clearly when you reach out to them.

Additionally, when you file the police report, be sure to include all your findings, like your dash cam footage and any other evidence. This can help the police in their investigation. Good luck!
