Tesla Insurance and UHAUL

Tesla Insurance and U-Haul Situation
I was involved in a four-car accident caused by a U-Haul that just drove off.

Unfortunately, the police aren’t taking any action because it’s the Bay Area, and U-Haul is being unhelpful as well.

They mentioned that the estimated damage of $15,000 would be split among the four vehicles and could take 6 to 8 months to resolve. My car, which is valued at $50,000, is likely totaled—I’d say there’s a 90% chance. I have a collision deductible of $1,000 and a comprehensive deductible of $500. How much will that cover for my 2025 Model 3 AWD in Quicksilver, which had only 100 miles on it at the time of the accident?

My Tesla appointment isn’t until March 31, and the accident occurred on February 25. What should I do? Should I sue U-Haul? Will Tesla Insurance pursue any actions against them?

It’s frustrating because I anticipated this poor service and the complicated policies.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear about your accident—that’s incredibly frustrating, especially with the complications involving U-Haul and the police.

Regarding your insurance coverage, here’s a basic breakdown:

    1. Collision coverage: Since your car is likely considered a total loss, your insurance would generally pay out the actual cash value (ACV) of the vehicle minus your $1,000 deductible. Since your Model 3 was brand new and had very low mileage, the ACV could still be closer to the full price, but it’ll depend on your insurer’s assessment.

    2. Comprehensive coverage: This typically covers events not related to collision, so it may not apply in this case unless you have other damages like theft or vandalism.

    3. U-Haul’s liability: If U-Haul is deemed at fault and you decide to pursue them, you can potentially recover your out-of-pocket expenses and any additional damages. Depending on the situation, Tesla Insurance may go after U-Haul for reimbursement, but this would depend on their policies and the accident circumstances.

As for steps you can take:
Gather Documentation: Collect all details from the accident, including photos, witness contact information, police reports, and any correspondence with U-Haul and your insurance.
Contact Your Insurance: Keep your insurer informed and see what they recommend. They may handle the claims process with U-Haul directly.
Consider Legal Action: If U-Haul continues to be uncooperative, consulting with a lawyer who specializes in auto accidents may be beneficial.

It’s a tough situation, but staying organized and proactive with your insurance and potential legal action is key. Good luck, and I hope you get the resolution you deserve!
