I’m reaching out for some advice. On September 3, 2024, I was in a car accident without insurance. I’m a 20-year-old corrections officer and hadn’t received my first paycheck yet, so I wasn’t able to get insurance at the time. A business vehicle in front of me suddenly slammed on their brakes while going about 50 mph, causing my small Civic to slide into their bumper due to my bald tires.

We both got out to assess the situation, and to my surprise, there were no noticeable dents or damage, just a slight scratch on the other car’s bumper. I informed the driver that I didn’t have insurance, and he seemed unconcerned since there didn’t appear to be any significant damage. He mentioned he would have to report it to his employer due to the accident detection, but since then, I haven’t received any communication regarding it—no letters, no emails, nothing.

Today, however, I opened a letter from Bell Subrogation Services demanding that I pay $2,989 for the accident repairs. I honestly don’t believe the damage could cost anywhere near that amount, and I currently have less than that in assets and cash.
